Parent Connection

Hello! I’m Bette Saffran, a children’s book author who writes affirming, character-building, heart-centered stories for young readers. Families often tell me they discover some of their best picture books for kids within my collection — stories filled with bright illustrations, emotional depth, and gentle wisdom.

I create children’s adventure books and SEL books for kids that highlight courage, kindness, and the beauty of seeing the world through different lenses. I’m also the grandmother of a remarkable 13-year-old ASD child. She has lived with me since birth, and together we’ve traveled through both difficult seasons and some of the most meaningful moments of my life.

🌿🌿🌿

She has always been her own delightful individual — precocious, funny, wonderfully creative. In many ways, she mirrors me. She is selective with food, sensitive to textures and sound, and full of imagination. She is the inspiration behind my character-building books and many of our best storytelling books.

If you’re supporting a child with ASD, you may recognize these experiences. There are challenges, yes — but the high points are limitless.

Our children may seem as different from one another as night and day, yet ASD families often share familiar patterns, comforting similarities, and surprising strengths. These shared moments inspire my stories — children’s adventure books that reassure every child that they never have to hide but can celebrate who they are.

🌿 Stories That Celebrate Differences

Below are a few of the best picture books for kids who love adventure, empathy, imagination, and heart:

  • The Lion Without a Roar— Instead of a roar, flowers bloom.
  • Spotless but Never Less— A baby giraffe with no spots but a nighttime shimmer.
  • Wheeler the Elephant— A name that stands out, and so does he.
  • The Tiny Steam Tug— A tugboat that pulls two steamships up the Hudson River.
  • The I Spy Gang— A forest baseball team discovered through visual noticing.

Each story shares a simple truth:
Different isn’t bad. Different is simply different.
And our children deserve stories that celebrate that.

🌿 Tools for Parents & Teachers

Every story is paired with:

  • Workbooks
  • Activity pages
  • Scaffolding support
  • Emotional learning tools
  • ND/ASD-friendly reinforcement questions

These appear in a special section called The Teachable Moment — designed for parents, teachers, and caregivers who want SEL books for kids that truly support emotional development.

My goal is simple:
To help children learn in ways that feel joyful, accessible, and meaningful.
